Great music is full of surprises. It’s one of the things that makes it great, whether it’s a tune by the Beatles or a symphony by Beethoven. On March 18 and 20, CGOA is inviting jazz piano superstar Tom Grant to join with the Gorge Sinfonietta for a very fun and very surprising program.
Tom Grant is, of course, the main attraction, and he’ll be performing with orchestra for the first time in his career. Grant will be performing some solo piano favorites as well as being accompanied by the Gorge Sinfonietta on a handful of classic Tom Grant tunes like “Bernie’s Groove” and “Celia.” Artistic Director/Conductor Mark Steighner is arranging the orchestra backup.
Tom Grant is the latest in a stellar lineup of regional and national artists to appear with orchestra. Others have included Storm Large, Sam Baker, David Wilcox, Stephen Seifert, and many more.
While Tom Grant is the featured performer, and no doubt full of musical surprises, the rest of the program highlights composers who have astonished and delighted audiences for generations.
Haydn’s “Surprise” symphony gets its name from a very specific musical moment that was meant to wake up slumbering audiences. For the March concerts, the “Surprise” symphony will be guest conducted by longtime CGOA participant Edie Polson. Ms Polson won the opportunity to conduct the orchestra in last year’s fund-raising auction.
Franz Schubert was only 25 years old when he composed his 8th symphony. Well, he started to compose it, anyway. He gave up the project after completing two, masterful movements. The music he wrote is full of drama, surprises and very recognizable melodies. Schubert never added the final movements, so ever since the piece has been called the “Unfinished” symphony.
The concert will open with the premiere of a new fanfare written for the Sinfonietta’s outstanding brass section.
“Big Surprises and Unfinished Business” will be in the newly remodeled Gorge Room at  the Best Western Plus Hood River Inn. Concert times are 7 PM on Friday, March 18 and 2 PM on Sunday, March 20. Wine and refreshments will be available an hour prior to the concerts.
Tickets are $20 adults ($15 for CGOA members), $5 for youth 10-17 and free for kids under 10. Tickets are available at gorgeorchestra.org. All audience members (including youth and children) must have proof of COVID-19 vaccination or negative test within 48 hours. Unless state regulations change, audiences will be masked.
