VISIT HOOD RIVER’S SHOP LOCAL FOR UKRAINE EVENT RAISES $7,878 IN RELIEF FOR UKRAINIAN CITIZENS AND REFUGEES

Participating businesses donated a percentage of April 9 sales to benefit relief efforts through Chef José Andrés’ World Central Kitchen

(HOOD RIVER, Ore.) — Inspired by recent fundraising efforts in Hood River and across the globe, local retailers rallied together to raise $7,878 to benefit citizens and refugees of Ukraine during the Shop Local for Ukraine event held Sat., April 9. With support from Visit Hood River, 17 participating retailers donated a percentage of the day’s sales to Chef José Andrés’ World Central Kitchen, an international aid organization working to provide critical relief services to those remaining in Ukraine, as well as those displaced by the war.

“Hood River is a community rooted in connection. We support each other and we support others in times of need,” said John Melesko, owner of Doug’s. “The Shop Local for Ukraine event is one of several local fundraisers that are truly a reflection of these values, which we are always more than happy to support.”

“I am humbled, but not surprised by the Hood River business community’s ability to pull off such a successful effort on short notice, and to have had such strong support from the participating businesses and those who shopped on April 9,” says Katie Kadlub, executive director of Visit Hood River. “We even had one young boy who was so eager to help that he opened a pop-up store in his home to raise money from family and friends.”
