SUMMARY:Lessons for Today: The Legacy of Minoru Yasui
DESCRIPTION:On March 28\, 1942\, Minoru Yasui intentionally violated a racially discriminatory curfew. He spent 9 months imprisoned in solitary confinement before being sent to an internment camp. In remembrance of his brave fight for justice\, the State of Oregon designated March 28th as Minoru Yasui Day. \nOn March 15\, 2025 President Trump invoked the Alien Enemies Act of 1798. The last time this law was invoked was December 7\, 1941 when it was used to arrest Japanese-Americans including Minoru’s father\, Masuo Yasui. The lessons of Minoru Yasui’s legacy are more critical than ever. Come learn about the connections between Minoru Yasui’s fight and the ongoing work of standing for justice today. There will be guest speakers\, opportunities to take action\, and a chance to connect with others who share a passion for justice. \nJoin us for a special screening of Never Give Up! Minoru Yasui and the Fight for Justice and a conversation with those working to continue his fight for justice today.

SUMMARY:Obsessed with Light
DESCRIPTION:Columbia Arts and Maryhill Museum of Art present \nObsessed with Light \nAn exclusive recorded Q&A with the filmmakers will follow the screening. \nObsessed with Light is a meditation on light and the enduring obsession to create. The film pulls back the curtain on Loïe Fuller\, a wildly original performer who revolutionized the visual culture of the early 20th century. But it is not a bio-pic. Creating a dialogue between the past and the present\, the documentary delves into the astonishing influence Fuller’s work has on contemporary culture including artists like Red Hot Chili Peppers\, Taylor Swift\, Bill T. Jones\, Shakira and William Kentridge\, among many others. In the process\, the film uncovers commonalities that connect these creative luminaries to Fuller and each other. \n
